Angela, There are great suggestions on this site. Just search for "care packages". You can also google something like "care packages for military". I found a good site with that as well. I will let you know if I can find it again. Homemade goodies are great.......I've sent my son cookies, etc. just not things that need refrigeration and chocolate melts.

Homecomings are so much more fun that ...goodbyes.

Don't want to get your hopes up since this is their first deployment and they do stay very busy but you might find your phone ringing one day and it could be your sailor calling from the ship! What ever the area code is from where the ship is homeported will be displayed in your caller id. Also if you are a facebook-er check to see if your ship has a page there, we were so delighted to get thru this deployment with the help of photos and updates from the ship on facebook.

Angela, my son is on the Sterett. I saw a news clip on ABC 10 San Diego of their departure, I cried. It's my sons first voyage too. Have you heard from him yet? I so wish I could have been there. I plan on being there when he returns.

Carol, My son has a friend on the Hopper. I believe the Hopper was also in the "penalty box" when the Chung-Hoon came into port. If I'm correct, it was covered with all kinds of scaffolding and being painted or something!

My son is on the USS Meyer and is a Damage Control Officer. I don't think I could be more proud of the accomplishments that he has done and will most certainly do in the future. I miss him terribly and he's a long way from home.....

Sterett set to leave on maiden deployment

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Two years after its commissioning into the fleet, the destroyer Sterett will leave its berth in San Diego on Friday for its first operational deployment.

Cmdr. Darren McPherson commands the ship, which will join the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group for the scheduled deployment to the 5th Fleet and 7th Fleet regions, according to a statement from the San Diego-based 3rd Fleet.

Sterett, carrying a crew of 39 officers and 275 enlisted sailors, will deploy with a two-aircraft detachment of MH-60R Seahawk multi-mission helicopters from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 77.

The Arleigh Burke destroyer is the fourth ship to bear the name of Master Commandant Andrew Sterett, who led his ships’ crews in battles against pirates during the Barbary Wars in the early 1800s.


Ohhh --- Spensmom! That just happens to be my FAVORITE destroyer! wink wink.
