I am new here. My son has PIR Feb 10,2012 then will be going to Groton, CT for BESS. I understand his goal is to be a fire controller on a sub.

Hi Popeye - welcome to this forum, great group and so much to learn.  My grandson has been in Groton since 5/6 and will be completing A School in March.  So you see it is a much longer time than 6 weeks.  My grandson is going to be a Sonar Tech ST each rating has a different amount of schooling but each has to go through BESS Basic Enlisted Sub School and that is 7 weeks long.  Then they may have ATT and TECHNO school, Navy is doing away with those two classes but not sure when  AFTER all that he will go to his A school for his specific rate.  Hope this helps and makes sense.

That's Machinist Mate-forgot to proofread!

I think I'm in the right place. Hello Navy family! My son graduated 1-06-12 & went to Groton on Saturday. I wish I understood all the classifications & schools! He thinks he's there for 6 weeks & it's A school. He's called a Fireman Apprentice & he's sposed to go on a sub eventually. But when he originally went to boot camp, I thought he was a Machist mate. I'm sure he knows what's going on but I'm totally confused! So I'm glad to be on here to talk & maybe find out some info. Thanks!

My son will be heading to sub school following PIR on 1/27.  Can anyone tell me how long sub school is and if there a difference between sub school and "A" school?  Does their length of time here depend upon which job category they are in?  Thanks!

Congratulations Jo on the engagement.  My grandson also proposed while he was home over the holidays it was very neat.

SSMom grandson is in A school also and will be done in March - not sure about the PT hasn't said nothing but I know he had quizzes and stuff this week.

Congratulations Jo on the engagement!

My son said how surprised he was that pt was fairly easy this week...must be because he is almost done with A School?? However, he did say that they were very hard on the guys in every other area. They had TWO tests in four days this week so it was a very stressful week. He didn't have time to even think about missing home!

It was awesome to have Matt back for the holidays--he even proposed before he left! :)

Anyone else's Sailor comment on having trouble getting back into the routine? Matt says PT the first couple days was near impossible after eating so much while he was home. :P

Talked with my Sailor last night he got the kind of Machinist Mate that we wanted.. He is a MMW or TM (torpedo man).. He will be working with the torpedoes.. He is one very happy Sailor right now..
