Val-ACD:  Good look to your son & his class on the final exam.  I also hope that he gets his travel arrangements squared away.  The hardest thing I have had to adapt to since my son has been at BESS (besides missing him, of course!) is wondering what the Navy has planned for all of them.  I am more of a "planning" type person; I like to know things in advance to plan to be sure I don't leave anything out.  The Navy is "what's happening today could easily change by tomorrow".  That has taken a lot of getting used to (guess you can tell I still haven't really gotten used to it yet)!  My son just goes with the flow and I'm trying to do the same but it would be nice to know things from a planning perspective before it happens.  Good luck with everything!!!

My son just found out that the October 7th graduation from BESS will actually be October 6th, Thursday.   Sounds like the NAVY decided to have a 4 day weekend and not work on Friday.  Nice to have a holiday but planning ahead for a graduation would have been helpful.   So sorry as now my parents will not be able to attend as my mom goes for chemo treatments on Thurdays.    My son is the only one outof the 11 who have not gotten orders (the rest inthe class are going on to A school),  He is quite frustrated with this as the others are filling out travel paperwork and he is not able to.   He planned on taking leave before the next orders but can't make any flight arrangements since he does not know where he will be returning to.  He has alerted many to pray that this gets resolved quickly.  BESS school final exam is today for the archer fish class - pray they all continue to do well.

Basic Enlisted Submarine School

My son got leave last May and he graduates A school next week. I think it depends on how/when they want to use it.

I've heard something like that as well.  But I've also heard he won't be allowed to travel far.  And I heard that he doesn't get any time off until after he's done his A School.

I have heard that the training.school in Groton shuts down for Christmas and New Years so they can take leave one of the two weeks

ProudMama, is this his first time out overnight since he went to bootcamp? His rate is Machinist Mate.  I think that's not the same as BESS. He's been told that his school is 18 weeks.  I've been wondering what might happen during the holidays from the standpoint of his leave/liberty.

Sheilamf, I think BESS is Basic Electronic Submarine School. He went to Groton July 30th, the day after he graduated from GL. We drove to Groton August 29th and stayed until the 31st.  He had duty on the 29th and was not able to leave base that day, but he did spend the next evening with us and was able to be out until 10 PM and could wear his regular clothes off base by then.  He just called last evening and said that he has a blue card now which means that he is able to be out overnight.

ProudMama.. not too far away. I'm sorry, but what is "BESS"? I've been looking at the travel options to/from Groton... there really isn't much.  Flights are expensive and not close.  Driving or train is probably going to be the plan for us/him when he's able.  Have you been up there before?

Sheilamf, We live in Lancaster, PA.  My son is graduating from BESS Oct. 7th.  We are going to be staying in a campground near by from the 5th to the 12th.  Our son will be there in Groton for 2 more schools plus  A school.  He'll be there for the next year yet.

Thanks Ladies, I'm graduating with my Son next week from GL to Groton, CT.  I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.  I know I'm going to need your help to help him & me get situated with our new location & responsibilities.  I'm in Northern MD @ the PA line. Anyone else nearby?
