My son just graduated from CS in Fort Lee and arrived in Groton in the wee hours of the morning and will be starting sub school.     I am originally from CT and my parents are only a half hour from the base so we are looking forward to going to visit.  So glad he can be near his grandparents.   When my son was about 5 years old his grandpa took him to the sub base to visit and tour the museum.  .... And now 15 years later he is there.

janh:  You don't know how good it makes me feel that you talked to him!  He knew I would finagle a way to get at least one picture of him.  That's really all I was asking for.  Unfortunately he has a habit of giggling at inappropriate times so I'm not surprised.  He has a smirk that he does when he's trying to be serious and the smile just can't help but come out.  He did it in band, in show choir and now in the Navy.  I'm glad one phase is over and another is ready to begin...

Cheri:  I'm sure all moms know exactly how we feel.  It is nice that I do not have as much of a financial burden on me since he's gone but I would gladly take that burden back in a heartbeat to have him home.  I'm glad that the Navy is where he is growing into a man.  Don't get me wrong; college is a good way for kids to grow up too but I believe that the military forces them to grow up pretty much whether or not they're ready to.  I guess I just thought he wouldn't be able to do it without me.  I wasn't ready to let go of the "being needed" part of being a mother.  It's all good though and he is definitely growing up, being responsible, and making me a very proud mother.

Cheri, do you have a suite reserved? How many can it sleep? PLEASE let me know as we had to go for something much more expensive for the weekend, but we can cancel our other plan if we can get in at Nave Lodge.

Proud navy mom - I got some great pics of your son. Will have to wait til I'm home (mid of next week). Your son was cracking up but I could tell he was very happy about it. He said he knew you'd find someone. I told him you and I had been thru a lot together - the other moms too

tackijacky:  Thanks for the warning.  I think I saw my son 10 hours when I went to his PIR.  He is hoping to come home for Christmas.  He left March 28.  I figured it would be hard saying goodbye again plus when he comes home he already has planned all the friends he wants to hang out with, the places he wants to go, etc. He even wants to visit some shipmates from boot in Pensacola, FL so my time with him will be very limited again.  Guess I just never realized that once he left home I was not going to be a priority in his life anymore :(  It makes me kinda sad but then again I know he has to grow up and form bonds with people other than me.  As long as he's happy, I'm going to TRY(!) to be happy.  It never does get easy saying goodbye, does it?
