cjasmin---they want to know what kind of person he is. Is he trustworthy?..has he ever been in trouble?..has he ever traveled out of the country?etc.... They interviewed our neighbors, my sons teachers, his friends,,,they wanted to get a feel for who he is and what his interests are. they didnt interveiw us (parents), but they did interview alot of people we know.

what a great idea, having other moms take pics of graduates who's parents can't make graduation. I'm hoping to make it to CT when A graduates, whenever that is. when the date gets closer, I will mention that in a post. Hope I can do that for someone.

NDG...You are right...I was joking, but, as you said, these moms are amazing!!  Maybe I could find a few who are picture takers and they could get some of my handsome son...fingers crossed that he makes it to 6/17!!!  Thanks for the suggestion.

You know what Jim's…you sound like you are joking, but my N4Ms buds took pictures of my sailor at the BESS graduation and sent them to me! It was really nice of them. My guy had a little audience and had to pose for pictures. He laughed about it, but I think it meant a lot to him, and it definitely did for me!! I bet you can PM some people on this site and they will take care of you...

I am in N. CA too, and made it to PIR and am planning to make it to the last graduation.

Beckie...my son graduates 6/17...we were able to go to GL for his 4/8 graduation...but unable (N California) to make the trip to Groton for BESS graduation.  I would have loved to go (maybe I will win the lottery between now and then!!).  Have a wonderful time!!  Give my son a hug...he will be the cute one in uniform :)

@Carol5290- My son became a CS at Ft. Lee and is at Groton now for BESS. He graduated A School but had to stay at Ft. Lee for several weeks until he got his orders for sub school. Once there, he was indoc for a few weeks and just began classes.

Cheri, you are so right! They have changed, and as far as I'm concerned, it's for the better. I know in my sons case, this will be a real test of self control. I am thrilled he is there.

Can anyone recommend a good, affordable hotel in the Groton/Mystic area?

Most of it is just passing the various trainers. Also too the intensity of the program as well as the holds are partially meant to weed out the guys that aren't going to be reliable. If they get in too much trouble while on hold when they have time on their hands, they get surfaced or even kicked out of the Navy. I have heard of quite a few guys from my husband's class and the few that are close to his that have been surfaced or kicked out for a wide variety of illegal behavior or just being unreliable like being late repeatedly, being disrespectful, or failing too many times on tests. I just have to shake my head because while yes, things are intense and challenging, it's NOT hard to follow directions and abide by the rules. This is basic stuff that requires a simple level of self-control, and these guys are throwing away their careers and their future for fleeting moments of pleasure or just plain laziness. Civilian employers wouldn't tolerate this stuff, and neither should the Navy. I ache for these kids though, because they obviously don't comprehend how badly they are sabotaging their future, just how much they are throwing away after they got this far.
