lol My son would prob do the same! Wow, I was under the impression that all that extra "stuff" was all part of A school. I have a lot to learn! so how does your son like it? I'm hoping my son - A really enjoys it. He proposed to his girlfriend at BC graduation and although I love her dearly, I think it's a bad time to think about marriage. I got the feeling he was extremely homesick, so if he's happy with A school, he just might postpone things for a while.

Oh sorry… let's see if I can remember LOL

BESS Basic Enlisted Submarine School

ATT Advanced Technical Traininng

TCNO Technical Computer Navy Operations (I THINK-always forget this one!)

They do all three of these before they head off to A school. Like I said my son is waiting to class up…they wait until they have a group who is finished and ready to go on to the next step. One of his friends-J- whizzed through the TCNO class and got into A school a few weeks ago… my son-IB- said that J just stayed in his room and worked really hard for a couple of weeks.

Please understand this is my take on understanding what they do, my son would probably roll his eyes and tell me that I have at least some of it wrong, but I'm close. :-)

Thank you NDG, your info helps. BC was tough, not being able to check up on him. Sounds like it gets better. What is BESS?

Oops, should have said he finished TCNO...

Renebo- my son is there now. He has finished BESS and is waiting to class up for A school. After BC, Groton is a HUGE improvement. The boys have a lot of privileges. They have a fridge in their rooms, can bring things with them, you can ship them things (although they don't have much space) and the best thing is that you can keep in contact with them much more easily. I find that as long as my son is not in class, I can call or text and he will usually answer me right away.

I know that they can take classes (they have 3, BESS, ATT and TCNO, then they go off to the A school that suits their rating) at their own pace, depending on how much time they commit to their studies.

My son is starting "A" school in Groton. How does everyone seem to like it? Any tips on getting around?

I *think* the orders may come up after Test 2...but he can check at any time. They didn't volunteer the info of when they were up for my husband's class, so they probably won't tell your husband either so he will have to go looking himself.

Thank You!! I will let him know.  Do the orders become available once he gets his job? Or just have him check around 3 or 4 weeks before he grads? Cuz he already knows what job he will have.

Congrats cjasmin518!! That is very exciting!

SubWife2011, got it. First step in trying to get moved out there early is to have him print out his orders and take them to Housing (same building as the theater) and Fleet and Family Support(building across the plaza from the theater). They will be able to look at his orders and help him figure out what he needs to do, and from there go up his chain of command and ask permission from the Chiefs. If they will sign off on an early move, you are golden! Good luck!

The money on the hotel is not for the move, we are going up on July 8 to visit him and he graduates on July 15. And we are also "homeless" living with his parents until we can get base housing.  So hopefully they will let us move up there before graduation....that would be awesome.
