Beckie...my son's graduation from BESS is July 1st. He also told me it's no big deal. My response to him was you know me...I WILL be there!! If you find out anything and do decide to go, I would love it if you would share.  Thanks!!

jahn--yes they are allowedcell phones and laptops. My son was more interested in his cell than the computer. He has a droid2 and it has the internet on it, so thats all he needed. i did eventually ship his computer, and it took FOREVER for the cable guy to connect his service. As the others started..they use the computer for recreation, not school. Its a great way to keep in touch and updated with your son. I joined FB strictly for that reason. Me and all of my N4M's moms are more active on there than the teenagers...lol!

Proudnavy mom.. You can get him a laptop and give it to him at the airport.. As for the internet they have to pay for it or get him the wireless one.. Now my fiancee and I went aroud looking for wireless services and found out that Sprint has the cheapest and is unlimited.. Will it help him with his school work probably not.. my fiancee hasnt used his for school at all.. OH YEAH the services there SUCK.. So it really doesnt matter what you get him, signal is horrible. I dont know if its because all thats on the base. After they graduate BESS they will get moved to another room even if is in the same building just a different side so don't have him get all these services through the Base since he'll be in that room for about 8 weeks. They can get packages and they're allowed food in their rooms. They have a fridge and microwaive. ..

Proud Navy Mom....when you are buying the laptop, also keep in mind that the laptop bag must be black....I sent my son a verizon hotspot, that cost 50.00 a month, they do not have internet connection provided to them, they can order comcast....also keep in mind they are moving into a barracks with two other guys, my son had two room mates when he got there and a couple days after he got there, they transferred across the base, so he was left with no tv, toilet paper or cleaning supplies.  They will also have a fridge, microwave and food locker in their room.  I have sent my son some care packages with his favorite snacks from home.

On the computer issue, are they able to bring their cell phones and laptop to Groton from Great Lakes, provided we give it to them at the airport in the infamous black bag? Some a-schools don't allow it.

laptops are great for keeping in touch with one another & for them to feel connected again.  my son uses his also to watch movies & play his music...i don't believe he has actually had a need to use it for school at this point, but there may be a need later on???

Hello everyone!  I'm a future sub mom; my SR is graduating from boot camp next week and will be going to Groton.  I'm hoping that you might be able to give me some information.  His father and I were planning on getting him a laptop for his graduation gift.  Will it help them with their school work to have their own computer?  Are there computer connections in their rooms or just in a library?  Will they have access to printers if they need to print assignments?  He already has a desktop but that is too big and bulky to mail.  Please let me know anything you know because I need to get the laptop this weekend.  Thank you all in advance for any information or advice you can give me.

Hi Everyone!! My son is graduating today from BESS and I feel really sad because I can't make it to the graduation.  M's my one and only.  He told me not to worry since he's coming home the end of this month. I will make sure I make it to the A school graduation.

Congrats to all the graduates!!
