Stepup 242, welcome. Be sure and also join the Chicago group. You've got some of the most amazing Sisters up your way!
I"m down in Troy, IL, close to St. Louis
My daughter just left for GL yesterday. We are from the Quad City area.
Brittanysmom, welcome! I am also from Southern Illinois and my son has been in the Navy for about 2 1/2 years and he loves it so far - we will see what he thinks after he deploys next month!! So proud of your daughter and all young men and women who make the choice to join. Be sure and sent lots of letter and cards to your daughter, she will need all the love and support she can get in the next few weeks - PIR is something you will never forget!
I don't have a real answer to your question AJ's Mom because my son is still in BC. But I do remembered a conversation I had with a friend who was a Marine just recently. He told my son not to purchase his vehicle in the State of VA because you have to pay a property tax each year on their car. So maybe that's something to consider. The expense is easier to maintain in Illinois than another state.
My son will be getting his first orders soon. I want to make sure we have our ducks in a row so to speak. Is there a place I should look for what to do? Otherwise my big question is about his car. It is currently registered in South Carolina. If we have him change his registration to Illinois we could easily make sure the new tags are purchased -- but what about getting the tags on the car? Do your sailors maintain Illinois plates or change to whatever state they reside in? I know this probably sounds silly, but really I'm lost.
Sure is a small world!
I hope to meet you ladies someday soon!
Pat - I did receive your PM and I will reply to you. Sorry but I log on here at work and for some reason whenever I try to reply back to a PM and hit send, it just doesn't send. So, I will have to do it from home. Usually on the weekends I don't log on because I am always out and about doing stuff and then I haven't figured out how to navigate this site from my phone.
Linda - Pat tells me you also live in Carol Stream! Hi neighbor. Please send me a friend request and I will happily accept.
Just to give you all a sense of where I am on my Navy Mom journey...My daughter left for boot camp in February of this year and PIRd on April 18th. She went in as Undes. and is now in Norfolk on the USS Porter. Her experience so far, from what she tells me, has been ok and is trying to stay positive and motivated. She has met some great people along the way and from all over the US. My husband and I drove to Norfolk over the Memorial day weekend to take a car to her. She is so thankful for that because this way on her free time she can go out and explore the city. She is my oldest of 3 children. My boys are 17 and 9. No doubt that we are super proud of her...miss her dearly and she misses us too.
God bless our Sailors!
