Hi All!  I'm a proud mom of a Sailor!  I have a question.....when the ship arrives back to port can anyone be waiting on the pier or is there some type of list of names one must be on??

Your names must be on the list to get on base. Your sailor had to do it by certain date

thanks so much :)  I figured that...and I know my Sailor would have taken care of whatever was necessary, but I don't know 100% if her stepdad is on the list.  So I am hesitating to buy airfare just yet.  I don't want him to fly all the way to Norfolk and then not be able to welcome our Sailors at the pier.  Another question....is there any kind of communication the day of arrival as to what the estimated time of arrival is?  Honestly it doesn't even matter, I would wait in sleet and snow to see her sweet face!

Hi Linn,  I'm a new proud mom of a Sailor too but my sister-in-law is the director of one of the USOs in Norfolk.  She has mentioned "Homecoming events" before so I think there is probably a celebration.  Perhaps you can contact the USO of Hampton Roads..Here is a link:

Hi Linn..your name must be put on a list by your sailor before the end of deployment.

Does anyone know if the 'cruise terminal' in Norfolk  is near the pier where the ship docks?  Looking to make hotel reservations and I would prefer to be fairly close.  Any hotel suggestions?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

The ships obundsman will have a list, your sailor has to put you on, she will email you with info. There is a BIG homecoming when the ship comes in, tent with catered breakfast. You can order a free banner is you want forgot where you get them. There is all kinds of fan fair. Married sailors get off first and greet their families and they will have flowers for the wife. My son's ship had a drawing for first kiss. When everyone is off your sailor can take you on board for a tour. Wonderful experience. Then we got to take our son home for leave.

OK I will be looking for that!  Do ships typically arrive in the morning? I bet it will be quite an experience.  I will be sure to bring lots of Kleenex :)

We stayed at the Navy lodge.

My son's ship was actually off shore the night before then they decked it all up with flags. It is a sight you will never forget with the crew all standing at attention all along the edge of the deck. It is a thrill.

His twin (the tall one) got liberty to drive up to greet his twin.

I seriously have tears right now.  thank you for sharing. I am so excited I almost can't stand it.  I am afraid I am going to miss something.  We are truly blessed to have such amazing children aren't we?!

If you click on the pictures you can make them big and then can see all the sailors on the deck.

Yes. Wow!
