Thank you all so much for the support - here's the update:

He will be going to A-school at Great Lakes for communications something or another (IC ET?)  It was the most technical thing they had available at the time. He was also advised that he can reapply to Nuke school, but needs to wait 2 years. His main goal was to get into a school, and not go undesignated. He had very few options, but hopefully this will work out for the best.

I pray that God looks over your loved ones in the Nuke program, After talking with the Chaplain yesterday, they are very careful about any "mental health issues" not only because of the sensitivity of the information, but also because of the amount of stress they must endure.

I hope you are able to spend some time with your Sailors this holiday season. Thank you all again, and I'll be joining another group on N4Ms - this website is a God-send!!

Hugs  :)

Hi B'snukemom you should fly into CHS airport they do have a USO there and they have a duty van at the school that can pick him up. The only thing I would suggest is if your son has to report by the 29th then I would schedule his flight the 28th or else get an early morning flight.

krtb- we are heading that way tonight - stopping overnight at a hotel in TN and then will get a fresh start tomorrow morning. Sure would love to fly there - 14 hours is a long drive but worth it! I hope you have a great time!

Mike's mom, my sailor has dealt with medical waivers too often.  He had a waiver (a common eye problem) before going to boot camp.  That waiver took a couple of months to get finalized.  Then, when he was in bc he had to apply for another waiver for the same eye problem.   The one thing that I have found out with waivers is that they are on government time..  Some take months, some take weeks.  THey are all frustrating.  I am wishing you and your new sailor the best.

Dor, so happy to hear your good news.  You and your family deserve a lot of happiness!

B'snukemom, just to put things in perspective.  Goose Creek is a hop and a skip from Charleston.  Depending where you are going, about a 20 to 30 minute drive.  Columbia is about a 2 to 2 and a half hour drive.  Enjoy PIR and your holidays with your new sailor!

Thanks Dor and Mary - I will book him into Charleston then!  I want to get this taken care of ASAP before fares change too much.   So looking forward to PIR in 31 days!

Hi everyone - I have a question for you "veteran" mom's and dad's. My son is set to PIR from boot camp on 12/21.  Just got our 1st "real" phone call today -YEA!  He said he will get leave from 16:00on 12/21 and has to report to Goose Creek by 16:00 on 12/29.  I will make his flight arrangements for him to fly home from Chicago with us and then back to SC.  My question is what airport does he fly into in SC? He said to make sure there is a USO there because they will have a shuttle to get him to the base.  I see there are 2 airports: Charleston and Columbia Metro - which should we use? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!  Also looking for any other tips you may have!

Thanks :)

MikesMom, prayers said that the right door will open for your son. He did everything right, prevailed through boot camp, I hope a way can be found that he can stay nuke or find his way. Hugs.

William - He did disclose everything, and filled out the forms. He got a medical waiver from a doctor at Great Lakes. It was the Doctor's superior that made the call to remove him. I understand the reasoning, I was just venting he didn't find out about being cut until after PIR. You'd think they'd have come to this decision earlier in the process... Does he still get to keep his ET rate? Which A School will he go to now? When will he get to know anything? Will he have to go undesignated and then strike for a position? Can he stay at THU until an opening comes up at an A School for his rate?

All of these questions should have been worked out before graduation, and not arise 30 minutes after. He was told simply to "come back on Monday". We're still waiting to hear from him.

One of his RDCs, the doctor who gave him the waiver, and the Chaplain were all there to tell him the bad news. His RDC agreed that he'd been <blanked> over, but as you know, the needs of the Navy...

I understand the security concerns and being very careful about having nukes out there with any potential stability issues, I just wished it had happened differently.

Anyway - thanks for letting me blow off a little steam!  :)  God Bless all of you and your loved ones running those reactors. They are doing a very difficult job and I truly admire the hard work they do.

Anyone else headed to GC to see their sailor for Thanksgiving?  Will be my first visit since Father's Day weekend.  Hope the Tgiving day flying doesn't kill me!
