Dor, I will be praying for your peace of mind, and the ability to continually trust in the One who can care for and protect your beloved boys where you cannot. I think helplessness is the hardest part of this Navy Mom gig.

This is my sailor's 2nd year away at Thanksgiving; he was in boot camp last year and his bc best friend's dad came from New Hampshire and picked them up and they hung out together all day, went to a buffet for dinner and spent the rest of the time in dad's hotel room on the phone and computer. He called us several times, we messaged on fb, it was great. He posted a couple of photos on his fb profile of himself in his peanutbutters (one wearing his BCGs lol) - the first time we got to see our son in uniform. What a blessed day it was, even though so weird and sad that he was so far away from home. We were so glad he could be with his best friend and they were taken such good care of. This year he is spending Thanksgiving with one of his married Nuke friends at their house on base, so he will be having a home cooked meal. Hopefully we will get to skype. I feel more at peace about missing him at Thanksgiving this year than last year, maybe getting used to it. We were lucky to have him home for Christmas last year right after boot camp, and he will be home again this year too. He also came home after A school in July. I know that this Christmas visit could be the last time for a while, and I will have to pull up my big girl panties like Mary and deal with it when he can't be home for any holidays and is gone for extended periods. It's only a matter of time. Gotta make the most of every moment we get.

Happy Thanksgiving, Moms. We are so blessed to have sons and daughters we can be so proud of. Whether we can be with them in person or not, they are always with us in our hearts.

Just wanted send my prayers out to DOR bless you and your family.  You built them strong and brave.

My son is currently on his way to Clearwater, FL w/his friends for Thanksgiving. However, his friend's mom had to leave to go to Maryland because his brother just graduated from boot camp. So, the kitchen is stocked & they will be preparing Thanksgiving dinner themselves. He did say he would be calling me or his Nana with questions about how to cook the bird:)

This "place" is amazing--I've been "here" such a short while but I can turkey say you ALL touch me. Dor, my most heartfelt prayers for you and your 3, but, mostly you. Sending you many hugs. Connie-I'm so so sorry...I've been there and feel your pain. I'll be sending up Reiki bubbles...hugs for you all

Dor, you are the epitome of a military mom ... so brave. Sending good thoughts your way. And wanted to let you know, since you're as much an animal lover as I am, just got back from the clinic where our beautiful orphan filly, Fanny, was put down this afternoon. Perforated intestine. What a tough, tough business this is.

I wish I could help Shannon with her question on passports and foreign travel, but this is one that I think the sailors have to take care of. It's just too tricky a situation for me to have a good answer. A training command will have their own policy on foreign travel, and like most things, it's likely to be more restrictive than a policy on a ship/sub. Mexico is also a special issue; as a federal worker, about half of Mexico is off-limits to me because it's considered too dangerous, so that's something to explore. I wouldn't think that there would be an American expatriate retirement community in one of the dangerous regions, but it would have to be checked out. Also, as a federal employee, a passport issued to me for work cannot be used for personal travel; I have to get a second passport on my own for that. I don't know what the policy for that would be for active duty Navy.

Dor - you don't have to be strong all by yourself - we are here for you!!!  Lean on us and we'll cry with you.  I'm tearing up right now at the thought!!!  Prayers and hugs!!!

Comment by buffalonavymom on November 23, 2011 at 2:08pm

prayers for you and all three of them Dor!

Our sailor is at the airport to come home for Thanksgiving. Hopefully he'll be home for Christmas as well. I'm planning on hugging all three of mine a lot!! I don't know where he'll be next year, his brother has an interview in another state in December, and his baby sister will be away at college. I'm not sure what the next year holds but i'm thankful that all of them are able to pursue their goals and hoping only the best for them!!

Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all of you and your children!!!
