We're planning on taking our son's pontiac gto out to him in early May. He bought the car last March (I co-signed his loan) & he has the payments automatically deducted from his checking acct. I told him he would have to wait until spring because I didn't want to drive his car through the smokies w/rear wheel drive.

Emily- Yes, Justin. But we call him Bubba. Man I wish you could have met him. Such a sweetheart and his new wife seems equally as wonderful (haven't met her)

 

About cars- my fiance got a 2002 Subaru outback at North Charleston Auto for 5000 but plans to keep it (may even give it to me if we get stationed back home and he'll take his old beater truck). The people were nice there it sounded like. You could probably haggle too (they had that particular car for a long time but my fiance is too nervous and shy to haggle). They also have a website to look at what they have and prices.

Connie - if they don't have an ad. bulletin board, they should!!  To be young and  gonna live forever in a great ride.   My first car was a Fiero, only had 4 miles on it when I drove it off the lot.   I am sure my father cringed, although he always offered to  change my oil and service it so he could drive it ;-)  

 

I can echo the same sentiments about study habits and motivation in high school.  He is now proud of his grades and has tons more confidence in his ability and what it takes to be successful.   I can thank the Navy for that.   He has never complained by watch duty or study watch or whatever other jobs they have besides going to school.  He just says "be where I am supposed to be, when I am supposed to be, and keep a low profile".  

One weekend he was washing the Master Chief's corvette and cleaning the garage, never got details but suspect he failed to keep a low profile.

I also asked my son if there was somewhere on base that people could post cars for sale with the same thought that maybe some who are shipping out might want to sell their cars. I also asked if maybe he says any cars on base with for sale signs in the window. He never answered me about if there was somewhere to post, but did say he never goes out to the parking lot. So, if anyone else can find out about postings, let us know.

RE: car situation. My son (18, in A school) called last weekend while he was standing on base next to a 31 yr old restored truck for sale; after we listened to how sweet it was, he casually said it was priced at "only" $9000. I think he wanted us to be the Voice of Reason, but actually all we had to say was, that's a big chunk out of the bonus which you are longgggg way away from receiving ... big sigh on his end. (I do understand, my 1st car at 18 was a used Camaro, made me feel like a million bucks driving that thing!)
IAnyway, my nephew just bought a beater car for $500 -- it's wheels that run, just transportation -- so I know those kind of deals are out there. I wonder if there's a bulletin board on base with ads for cars for sale from guys headed out on deployment?

I'm bummed today -- I did something when I was trying to hook up the Wii and now I can't get anything on the TV in the family room.  I guess I'll just have to read the news on the internet instead.  Luckily my oldest son is stopping over tonight and he'll be able to fix it OR it might be time to go buy a new TV -- they just don't make them like they used to -- I think this one is only 20 something :-).

Dor - you are so sweet.  Thank you so much for that invite.  I haven't even looked at the route yet.  I was thinking that it would probably be interstate 10 that goes more through the southern states.  I'll have to get out a map and see where it even ends up.  But if for some reason we'd go through Iowa, I'll let you know.
