SuzyPWarrior - My son is just like this. He is also an ET. Sadly, it hasn't changed since he finished Prototype and joined the fleet. I guess that is just how he is.  I have learned not to press too much and to just enjoy the times when he does choose to interact.

helena2000 & SuzyPWarrior - All of the sailors arrive at GC have to do what is called UI (Under Instruction). This is most likely what your son was getting signatures for Helena2000. They are learning how to stand watches in various different areas of NNPTC, and then I believe those have to be signed off on. I don't recall how many they do, it may be in my discussion above, but yes, they have to complete those about 2 weeks or so before A school graduation. It is not something that should be left to the end, or they are scrambling to get qualified and study for comps at the same time. They all have to be UI qualified so that they can stand watches while on T-Track. All a part of their overall Navy training as I have come to realize. So, hats off to your son Helena for taking the initiative and getting this done. My son highly recommended doing so.

As for the lack of communication Suzy - well that is why I have my discussion above. My friends weren't hearing much of anything from their sailors, but mine was INDOC for a month, and also is very outgoing, but knows his mom well enough that I am an information gatherer.  I did also learn his schedule and sometimes I would just text and say can you call me? Unless it was something urgent and then I usually left a voice message, he knew I was just letting him know I was available to talk and if he could to call me, because I don't like to text, I prefer email, but for him to email me back meant he had to have internet or get to his computer, so it was easier than emailing on his phone.

You are not alone, the silent treatment in A school is more preparation for the fleet for us moms and it just depends on your sailor. There is a short window in the afternoon evenings and then Saturdays were usually the best time for us. And right after he got back to his BEQ after PT (which for ETs should be 2x / week unless they changed it.) so ask your sailor when he has PT and what time it is.

My Nuke is about halfway through A school, and it varies how much we interact. We don't do email much, but usually text here and there or even talk for awhile. Just not very often. I mostly let him lead. Maybe it's a phase where they want to establish themselves in a new place, make new friends, just feel stable. They still have things to do even before classing up, so probably not something you should worry about too much. My son was getting signatures for something they have to finish before A school ends, because he would rather get things done and out of the way when possible. If I call and he says gotta go, it's okay. Now he has tickets for a visit in early November after graduation. Something else to look forward to.

motherofthefuture - Welcome to Nuke Moms!  What a catchy name, I like it!! Our wonderful admin B'sNukeMom is having some R&R time but she will roll out the welcome sign when back.

We love to hear about everyone's new adventure, so please introduce yourself. There is a lot of information in the discussions directly above and in the pages to the right. Be sure to click "view all".

My son started his 2nd year this summer and he is now out in the fleet assigned to the USS FORD and working on his qualifications on the carrier. It is moored in Newport News, VA for the moment.

WearsLargeHats - My important passwords, I keep secure. It is the random ones that I can easily ask to change that I don't always get written down some place. I think my husband has started using LastPass. I was always leery of a third party manager, but I may be learning my lesson with this one. Mostly, I didn't think about it. We were trying to get my camera fixed on my computer and I was concerned about my files and database that I built from scratch, so I had those backed up  but didn't know they were going to give me a brand new computer! So, those passwords I ask the computer to remember - well those are the ones I am going to be playing catch up on. - Good to hear from you!

Comment by WearsLargeHats on September 25, 2019 at 11:45am

Chipmunk -- I recommend using a password manager so that you can use a different (preferably random) password on each site and don't lose them if your computer fails. I like LastPass for that. There is a trick to remembering gobbledygook passwords. I can do it, but only for so many things.

NancyJo - thanks for sharing the picture!! Glad you were able to see your new grandbaby!

B'sNukeMom - enjoy your R&R. My Friday starts with a colonoscopy! Not quite the same relaxation.

Welcome to all of our new members in the last couple of days! We are glad you are here and welcome any questions or comments you have.

I now have a new working computer!! Too long of a story but it took the store 3 tries before we got a replacement that was working properly!! It didn't save my passwords, so I had to do my best to recall, just so I could log on to N4M today!!
