Information

Alumni Division 901 PIR (Graduate) Friday, 20 Nov 09

This group is started for our SRs ~ division 901 PIR date of 11/20/2009. I will add more information and links later : ) ~ kk

Just some good stuff to know...

Once you read the Great Lakes Naval Training Command website (specifically the "family" drop down), at: http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/
...you may want to visit the NEX website: https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexjobs/nx_show_state?p_state=IL

...the recruit store link
:
https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexstore/nx_display_facility_new?
p_facility_no=106

the NEX Gift Card link:
https://www.navy-nex.com/command/customer_service/gift_card.htm

It is my understanding that they automatically deduct $150 of their funds (payroll) and deposit it in a NEX account, for them to use for their wanted or other items. I will have to write my SR to see if this is the case : )

Angie F posted this on one of the groups recently. I feel it is great information for us;

..."when the Recruits arrive at RTC there is a lot of intake and processing and then they are assigned to their divisions. As I understand it, they are first asked if anyone has prior experiance with N/ROTC, Band, or other musical skills or leadership. Those who do AND who have high ASVAB scores tend to be chosen to be placed in a 900 Division. There is usually only one of these Divs per TG (Training Group) consisting of multiple divisions which graduate together on the same date.

The 900s are the ones tasked with helping to run the PIR (Pass in Review-i.e. Graduation) ceremony. Each incoming 900 Div is given one of three support roles on a constantly rotating basis, i.e. Ship Staff-non musical, includes the graduating Honor Guard Rifle Drill Team, Flags-presents US, States, POW/MIA, and finally Triple Threat-musical, the Jr. Drill team, Bluejacket Band and Choir and Drum Corps. If they see that he has the qualifications, he may be chosen to be assigned, just depends on where they are in the rotation, among other factors. There will be other Navy opportunities beyond BC that he can indicate his interest in and offer his talents to as well. :) "

I just purchased a NEX Gift card. I used the send to me option. I want to make sure it is sent with the proper address while in BC at GL.

The staying connected with other N4Ms is truly helping with my "missing my son times."

My profile picture is a special item that my son gave me several months ago. I carry it with me all the time. My special item that goes with me ~ since he can't. He thinks it is funny!

Suggestions from other N4M members regarding PIR
:
Take binoculars
Ask your sailor to set up a meeting spot within the hall. I guess it gets hectic when Liberty is called.
(I am not sure how our performing group returns their flags, etc. before Liberty.)
Be prepared! Some have experienced a non-Grad N Go status to be changed right up to PIR. This could mean a minimal visit at Great Lakes, spending most of your time at the airport.
Picture experiences: They are ordered by our sons and daughters to be picked up at the NEX PIR weekend. Experience prices ranged from $147 to $250 (with DVD).
Each Division designs a flag. Flag design items (sweat shirts, t-shirts,etc) can be purchased at the NEX.
"A" School note - civilian clothes are not worn immediately. Expereince by the attending families said they are weaned in within about two (2) weeks. It was stated they earn this right.
Most of their Sailors wanted to get out and see Chicago.

Christine gave us some great information regarding our seating ~ We sat directly to the left of the review stage. There should be signs with the divisions numbers where they will be and parents are encouraged to sit in that area across from where their division will be. There will be recruits from future graduating divisions to help with questions about seating areas. They are very polite young men and women. Don't forget to tell your son to order the PIR DVD and division "yearbook" when he orders his portraits.

Colleen I did do a quick search of our photos...none of the color guard. To be honest, I thought your son was rifle drill team : (

Re: Captains Cup ~ I am sorry to hear so many were sick. So many of the 901 were sick up to BS 21 ~ they were determined to finish on time. This can be tough.

Re: Hall of Fame ~ It is my understanding the reason the 901 did not get the Hall of Fame was due to a few that arrived late AND the division was dinged points because of it.

Clinic at GL BC ~ It is my understanding the Clinic at GL BC is goign to be eliminated. I am not positive, but it appears they will utilize the VA across the street. In my opinion a better choice! ~ kk

Have a wonderful trip!

My son received his address today...so I shipped off the cell and a few clothing items. He was just fine with Priority Mail. The laptop will be shipped tomorrow evening...just have to find the best way. So far no definite word on the holiday Liberty. ~ kk

Re: new Sailors and the Christmas/New Year Holiday ~ Some bases (A Schools) give a partial Liberty during these holidays to new Sailors. I have been told they try to give the new Sailors with children the Christmas portion and the new Sailors without children the latter part inclusive of New Years.

DonnaM My son and the other Division 901 Sailors at Corry Station are NOT allowed to leave base. So far none have been able to put in "chit" requests for Christmas due to their late arrivals. They will find out more on Monday, or thereafter. They are hoping for a partial holiday during stand down. In addition, I am told that some "A" schools - like Great Lakes - shuts down. If a Sailor is not going home, they have to pack up their items and move to another barracks (told to me by a Sailor and an employee of the NEX). This is not the case in Pensacola or Corry Station. Their Sailors remain on base if they do not get Liberty. The move of Sailors to their "A" School bases was tough during Thanksgiving week - so many Civilian Federal and Military take leave until Monday.

To my N4M friends ~ Did you know the NEX had Black Friday sales yesterday? My son was so excited about all the 25%+ off deals! ~ kk

Tell everyone I said, "Hello!"

Hello my N4M friends! If your Sailor is in Chicago, make sure they request the weekend pass on the Metra when they board. It is $5.00 for unlimited on Saturday & Sunday. Also, starting January 1st, there may be a fare increase when you purchase passes or pay the fare on the train. Also, when the weather changes, or on a good day, the Metra accommodates a limited number of bikes per trip (I think 12) - just a thought if your Sailor is in "A" School for any length of time. I loved the Metra!

Thank you for the get well wishes. I did return to work, but not totally up to snuff. I think my last nap (11.50 hours) was a BIG help! I have a busy weekend ahead (2 research papers - great topics so love the brain food!).

We are getting boxes ready to ship to Corry Station on Monday evening, as we will not have an address until Monday. I unpacked the kid-in-a-box this morning! My son laughed when I told him it was staying packed until he arrived at "A" School.

kimbokatbo I enjoyed meeting the twins! They are adorable. Please tell them that they need to "give-it-right-back" to Dad, as nurseysis and I did! hahahaha Also, have they started making the blankets & pillows for Christmas gifts yet? Yes! Lake Bluff & Lake Forest were beautiful little towns - hmmmm it appears a celebrity, or too, lives in one of those!

JulieR ~ I love the smiles in the picture! I will tell my son about this to view. I hope the new job is going well.

I hope to get my pictures downloaded AFTER the research papers, etc. It is my treat at the end of the hard work.

Have a great weekend! ~ kk

My son called today. Once he gets his mailing address the cell and laptop will be shipped off. Thank heavens for the old fashioned phone booths and phone cards! Luckily, several of the 901 went to Corry Station ( Pensacola) together. They have been shopping at the NEX (stocking their rooms & buying uniform items), eating together (good food I am told), going to the rec hall, and taking walks around base.

To our upcoming PIR Moms and Friends ~ Please tell (snail mail) your Sailor Recruits that you see the light at the end of the tunnel of their BC journey; through the eyes, ears, and hearts of the Division 901 Sailors and their moms. It is so difficult for your SRs - they are on the edge every minute. They know that someone else's mistakes can make their life miserable in BC. This does not end at PIR. They carry this fear to their "A" School destination. Then hour-by-hour they realize the Navy is not an angry place.

I am so happy to hear the eagerness and delight in my son's voice! I still miss him terribly. ~ : ) ~ kk

Colleen ~ My son did not know I was sick until he called last night. I kept the pace at Great Lakes : ) He wanted open skies the entire weekend. We traveled a lot of distance! I will post some good places to eat, to see, etc. and some transporation hints later. I want to make sure your PIR is fun too! December 4th right? ~ kk

It was great to meet DAVIDSmom, kimbokatbo, arlietx, and JulieR and their families! We had a nice time meeting each other on 11/19 and were happy to sit as a group on 11/20. We (nurseysis, DAVIDSmom, kimbokatbo, arlietx, and I stood outside of the entrance door and listened from afar (at least a mile!) as our 901 Sailors sang and marched to the graduation hall. It was a fantastic experience to listen...then they appeared! We were all quiet as mice : ) ~ kk

re: pictures ~ we have 4 cameras to download pictures from and will be placing some on the site...at a later date...as I came home with the flu
