Hahaha okay :) This is great! :) At this point, I'm just going to keep track of weeks and go from there. I'm overestimating when he'll be back so I'm pleasantly surprised when he gets back sooner! Thanks so much for the info! :)

Thanks for the info! Alex (my boyfriend) went to Nuke school in Charleston, too and visited some of his friends on the way down to GA. :) I've heard so many good things about the Alaska, so I'm happy for him in that regard!

Another question: do you get to know when they will be coming back into port later in the deployment or is that something where you just get a phone call from them when they reach their phone after getting off the sub?

Comment by karinabeana611 on April 20, 2013 at 2:00pm

Wow, thank you so much! :) It's so nice to be able to be in touch with people that have sailors on the same sub! :) My sailor is originally from Montana, but was stationed up here in CT for BESS and Torpedo A school, so that's when I met him. :) I'll definitely try the numbering thing. Does it matter what the subject says? I read somewhere that it has to be their official rank/name (MM3 Alex Clark) but I guess maybe it doesn't matter. :) Have a great day everyone!! :)

My son was in sub school when my dad, (his grandfather) passed away.  The school was so good in get him leave and on a plane home for the funeral.  The funeral was in April and in Aug. of that year we had to bad hurricanes with in 2 weeks of each other.  The school lined them up in formation and ask if anyone had family in the area.  If course my son was the only one, they asked him if he need to go home.  He told them no my mom is good.  The boat even called my sister when Sandy came through.  I never got that kind of support when my ex was in Desert Storm.  They sure have come a long way in taking care of the families.  But the Emergency Email is a good thing to know, thank you for the info.

Welcome aboard, the best way is to number your emails so you know how many and in the order that they come.  This is my sons 5th patrol, he will be leaving the boat in July, he has been on the boat for 4 years, and wanted to do another but could not.  He will be going to shore duty for 3 years and hopefully back to Kings Bay.  If you have any more questions just ask.

I just joined this site and found this group and it's so helpful, so thank you to everyone! I'm not a mom or a wife (yet) but I'm a girlfriend of a sailor on the Gold Crew. This is his first deployment so we're both getting used to everything. It's awesome how frequent emails come, but it's a little confusing as well. Have any of you found a good system that works to keep track of which emails he gets/his replies? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks :)

Glad you got to talk to your son also.  I have gotten a call from mine also, he had gone out for a week with the blue crew then this boat would come out and get him after a week and bring him in.  Of course he had to call his mom as soon as he got on that other boat.  Usual when he is in port he calls me almost every night.  It is just him and me so who else is he going to call.

So glad you finally heard from your son Kathy.  Mine actually called me last night.  I just smile after I hear from him. I don't think they realize how little it takes to make us moms happy!

Well I got my sons 4 email last nigh.  He is so sweet he keeps telling me to get out to the house and do something, and I keep telling him if I get out I am going to spend money.  I am now a student again back in college and I don't need to spend money.

Don't know if your son is going with you but there in a Navy base down and they have a Navy lodge there.
