Hi ladies (and gents if any). There was a question in another group about BS-21, whether they pass or fail as individuals or as a division. I am pasting my answer here in hopes that you may be able to use some of it when writing to your recruit:

They work as a team/division in that exercise, however they are passed or failed as individuals. It's not important that each and every recruit be experts on everything they do there, it's more important that they work together and follow the orders of another recruit who does know that particular thing better. They need to put personalities aside, listen to someone they may not care for, and then speak up and be the leader if they know that particular thing best. It's called "thinking on your feet" - and if they understand their personal strengths and weaknesses (on doing certain jobs), they will do fine if they work as a team - because a fellow shipmate will step up to the plate and take up the slack. Does that make sense? No one is an expert at everything, and if you have a recruit who really is close to perfect, remind them that they shouldn't always be the leader either - that is not true teamwork. Hope this helps. Maybe you can all phrase it in your own way and let your recruits know how crucial it is to work together that night at BS-21. If the whole division looks good working together, then the inperfections of a small handful will not stand out.

You guys are getting so close now, glad to hear that some of you got calls - that's something we did not get (slackers in his division ruined it for all of them), but I loved getting those letters. Hopefully they are able to write more than one day per week now, but a lot of them are probably trying to rank up to E-2 right now, so that means extra studying and making sure they learn all they can for BS-21. Keep sending those inspirational letters - my son still has his, says he will never throw them away - kept him sane in a crazy place!

I'm on a dry spell here hearing from my boyfriend... he hasn't written since July 9th. I was getting about 4 letters a week from him for a while. Guess I was a little spoiled... I hope everything is okay. From what everyone else in our division has heard, things are going better than ever. Hopefully he's just too busy to write.. =( I'll keep writing though. Less than 2 weeks!

Does anyone have a sailor headed to Gulfport, MS after PIR? My son still doesn't know when he will be leaving GL. But I am not getting mail either to know if he found out.
