Morning from San Diego everybody...no, not from here but down here on a business trip.  Will get to see our son who is a Gunner's Mate Instructor here in the Navy and his wife and our five month old granddaughter, Maya.  Kris, congrats on the cake balls.  They really are fun.  Sharon, love your pics on Sym's Chocolates page.

My son left yesterday morning - just 30 minutes before my flight took off and I have to say, it was still hard to say good bye without crying.  But he is back in GC now and says he'll be moving out of Skywolf and into .... can't remember the name.  Don't know if he'll have the same roommate yet or not but he sure did take a bunch of stuff back with him.  Over 120 lbs. of clothing, computers and sub-wolfer in his luggage!!!  lol

hapsmolmr~my son has Verizon as well.  The only problem, like Emily said, is in the barracks.  No phone calls can be made in there.  We just text when he can't phone and it works out just as well.

My son is in A School now.  As far as roommates, my son had one for about 3 weeks and then he went on to Power School.   He is alone now, just waiting for someone to come in.  He was happy that he could switch to the larger armoire in the room!:)

Navy Lodge actually has no taxes if your Sailor's name is on the room reservations. The front desk requests them to stop by after PIR to verify! We stayed there and was very happy with the room (w/kitchen)... the mattresses are brand new this year and were very comfortable!

CASEY! :)
So glad to see you back here!! :)

P.S. I'm pretty sure none of the new moms know who I'm talking about when I say "Casey said" or "I learned this from Casey" :)

Elizabeth, Thank you!! I am not a "professional" when it comes to the "Cake Pops." I have been doing chocolates for over 30 years and had a retail chocolate shoppe, so it is different in that arena. I am enjoying doing the Pops and reading Bakerella's book. Remember, they are time consuming so make sure you have a few hours to do them.

Emily, Kudos to Aaron!!! That is awesome. Diego will be taking his comps next Tuesday. Prayers please that he pass them!!! Kelsey is enjoying her job at the base gym, easy work and pay!!

Oh, and roommates- Aaron has had a ton. One moved in the same day as him, but was married so left a week later. He had the room to himself for two or three weeks before another married guy moved in-- and then out. And then he had the room to himself for about a month before his roommate (MM, and Aaron is an EM) moved in. He moved to a different room for Power School, but he still had the same roommate.

I think its the luck of the draw. :)

I think Verizon in general has good service in GC (or at least in my experience). They only thing that sucks about it is in the barracks. But, I've never heard of anyone getting good service in any barracks on any base (I come from a military family). Most of the time, they have to go out on their balcony thing to get enough service to make a call... But they can still manage text messages from their room. :)

Other than the barracks though, Aaron and I have never had a problem with Verizon service anywhere else down there.

Sounds like I made some good choices as we have reservations at the Residence Inn near GL from Thurs thru Mon just in case he doesn't have to fly out on Sat but if he does leave on Sat, we want to move to Chicago for the last 2 nights.  Thanks for the info.

Also, regarding the cell phone issue, does anyone know if the new Verizon i phone has good reception at GC?

Comment by mommajo on May 24, 2011 at 12:36am

Roommates--my son has had the same roommate since arriving in GC.  They PIR'd the same date.  "baby nukes" do end up together; suite mates were in power school at the time.

The balls are looking great!!  I, too, would love to be a neighbor and sample for you :)

Comment by Maddie on May 23, 2011 at 9:51pm

hapsmolmr, we stayed at the Residence Inn while at Great Lakes.  Friendly staff. It did have a kitchen but only the refrigerator came in handy as we always ended up ordering tons of food which, as usual, got tossed in the end.

spent a couple of days in chicago after pir since it was closer to o'hare where my sailor's flight was at.  stayed at the renaissance, which was a walking distance to a lot of the shops, shows, must sees.
