Gotta be honest, I'm having a hard time with this. We've always been very close, but he told me two weeks ago that he was signing up - turns out he had been talking with a recuiter for months. It was so out-of-left-field for me that I'm still trying to come to terms with it. Seems like I just bounce between wanting to cry and being so very proud of him.

What do you think their PIR date will be? I'm supposed to be at a conference in Minneapolis from Oct 22-24.

October 24th would be my first guess.  9 Friday's from when they leave.  I understand they will have about 5 P days before the clock starts ticking.  After that it's 8 weeks.  Most new recruits seem to graduate on their 9th Friday.  So Minneapolis isn't far, as long as you can get out very early that morning or the night before.

Conference doesn't end until 1pm on Friday. No way I'm missing PIR! Gotta talk to the boss about it.

My son also leaves the 26th and will turn 18 in BC!  I love the idea of having a party before he goes - I can't believe I didn't think of it before seeing it here!  He has wanted to serve since he was a pre-teen and as much as I dreaded him making this decision, I am proud of him for choosing this honorable path.

DPEY have the party.  Wow  18 in BC.  Time for a big party.

Just finished his Anchors Aweigh party. Everyone had a great time and I didn't even cry during the party. Of course, then he left to go out with his friends and I lost it while cleaning up.

I'm reading and starting to cry myself...again.  We did our party a couple weeks ago, Combined it with a high graduation party and had family in from all over the country. I was too busy to cry.  But making up for it this week.

Last night I made hotel reservations to go to Columbus and see him off.  We are taking him to dinner Sunday, going to MEPS to watch the swearing in on Monday, then tagging along to the airport.  I'm trying to get the house together and we are planning several different family dinners this week.  I still need to get phone cards and make that address list for his wallet.  This past weekend was my birthday and he spent most of the weekend doing my kind of things,  Its going by too fast!

My son had his wallet stolen this weekend! Fortunately, we hadn't finished loading it up so we still have his Soc.Sec card. He had to enroll in a class at school to get a student ID so he woudl have some form of picture ID next week. Not enough time to get a new copy of his license from the DMV. Next step is to get a new calling card since that was in the wallet already. Grrr.

I know what a pain this can be.  How do I know?  My son had his stolen last month.  No kidding.  The police later recovered the wallet and a few things, but we had to go through the process of getting a new license.  Thankfully his SS card was not in it.  It seems every time I type a message this week, I start to get a panic feeling.  Oh Lord.  Only a few days.  I'm not sure I'm going to be OK.

There's a wonderful piece of advice somewhere on this site - don't miss them before they're gone. I keep telling myself that when I start to feel the floodgates opening. Sometimes it even helps :-)

I'm glad you're able to go to MEPS. My son doesn't want me there - he says it will be too hard for him, so we're saying goodbye at the recruiters.

Today I feel great.  I think I might actually be ready.  It helps that he's so excited.  Last night he told me that the days are dragging by, he just wants to start this.  Lord knows I'm going to miss this amazing child.  It's been tough coming to terms with the finality of a military career vs college.  If someone had asked a year ago, I would have guaranteed that right now he would be in a dorm and I would be planning trips to watch his college wrestling matches. He's a phenomenal athlete and had some impressive opportunities.  But in the end it has to be his decision.  And it is.  He had to push back against coaches, counselors, and even me.  So kudos to all the kids strong enough to chose for themselves.  I'm glad I've had so much time to adjust  But I think I'm ready...and that just makes him feel great..
