Hello everyone! My son just recently got picked up as a HT. He was an undesignated fireman, so he is happy for the new job. He is stationed in Norfolk for now. Unless things change, he will go to Japan in 2015.
My brother was a HT when he was in so he said he will get some good experience. Two of my brothers did 20 years in the Navy. I am not sure my son will stay in that long. He now says he wants to go to college when his time is up. But I always say, you just don't know what might happen between now and then. Some girl might come along and change those plans. ha
at MomThatLovesHerSon mine is also an HT1, and has almost 7 years in. currently stationed in Japan, previously stationed in San Diego. He is in charge of the repair division on the ship he's on. Welding and pipe work is the specialty for a Hull Tech. so he will acquire some skills that can be used on "the outside". There are plenty of worldwide assignments for HT's as the Navy can't function without those engineers (fix it guys).
Momthatlovesherson - The HTs are part of the damage control group. My son is an HT and working on his plumbing apprenticeship so he will hopefully have his journeyman's card by the time he gets out of the Navy. He also does welding as part of his job and has / is receiving schooling and training for both. The damage control group is also trained in firefighting. As a group, they are responsible for keeping the sheet running. They are learning skills they can use in the civilian world and earn good pay. My understanding of the Boatswain Mates is that they do a lot of the grunt work - painting for example. A lot of painting. He should talk to a career counselor and they should be able to explain to him. Best of luck!
Hi moms,
I am new to all things Hull Technician. My son was in the Nuke program. He graduated from Nuke A school. Then he didn't pass Nuke power school and is currently at DTP in Goose Creek, SC.
If I understood him correctly, he had the choice between Boatswain's Mate and Hull Technician and he chose Hull Technician. He has put in his choice for home port and ship type.
I look forward to "meeting" y'all and learning about the world of HT!
Hello seasport. My son also graduated from A school the week before your son. My son is also going to Norfolk for shore duty. Actually he has ben in Norfolk for almost a week now. He likes it there so far.
My sailor graduates from A school Thursday & will be home Friday on leave, before heading to Norfolk for shore duty! Wahoo!! I am so excited!
Yes, that is exciting! What type ship will he be on, or does he fly to Guam first? My son will dread it if he's on hold for very long!
My son received verbal orders about two weeks into strand. He finished HT strand April 25. Hold after strand was torturous! Lots of confusion as to if, when and how long he'd be able to come home before shipping out. He's home right now - received two weeks leave. Departs for Guam on 24th. Exciting!!
My sailor is in his 2nd week of HT strand school & said he may be on hold at least another month after he finishes school. Will he get his orders right after school, or sometime during hold? Will he be able to come home during hold? He heard HT's orders are backed up. It sure is hard to plan vacation when everything is up in the air! I'll just have to deal with it.
