@gbfuturewife I live in Serra mesa! It's the absolute best and safe! Just try not to get a house on hurlbut st. Sederstom and larkdale are the best imo. We have village at Serra mesa uncensored page on fb. Join and I'll approve you

Does any one have a y imput on the village at Serra Mesa housing? Me and my daughter are moving there in a month or so but my wife is deployed on the TR so it will be just us.

Vickie360 when Jenn said he sleep I know that feeling. when out on the ship they normaly work 12 hr shifts. And if they are in a different time zone it is hard to get the time difference down. As they won't be able to tell you exactly where they are or where they are going. We had talked about the possible port visits and had code words so we knew. They also can't say when they are coming back but then again we used code we decided on before he left. Also make sue if he has his own phone bill you are on there to make changes. I wasn't so had to do some finegaling to be able to get his phone back on. Plus it didn't work in like Italy or Turkey and he had sprint.

Hi Vickie360 - I put my son's phone on a military hold while he was deployed which is what a majority of people who deployed with him did. International plans are usually specific to coutries/areas so even if you added one it could be possible that the phone wouldn't work where he is.  I left it on until they pulled out of Hawaii and then I had a good idea of the time they would be back in Hawaii so I reactivated it a few days prior to that.   My son had his phone and was still able to listen to music and play games he had downloaded.  He also took his computer with him so he could watch movies when he had down time.  He worked in a shop with a computer so when he had the opportunity he would email me and he called a few times from the ship's phone.  Usually when he had the time and there weren't any lines for them he was too tired and chose to sleep instead of call. I heard from him less than I would have liked - but I think that is pretty common.  And not because he didn't have access to getting in touch with me but more because he got into a routine and when he wasn't working or eating he was sleeping.  A lot of the other moms in my deployement group had the same lack of contact.   If you do choose to put the phone on military hold you may want to contact your carrier first to see what they require.  AT&T asked for paperwork to prove he was being deployed but we live in San Diego so rather than trying to do it over the phone with some random call center I actually went into a store and talked to a rep so they could get it taken care of.  Since we are a military town it is a more common occurance here. Also - I didn't have the paperwork they wanted and he was already gone - they took me at my word.  Good luck with whatever you decide and your upcoming deployment!

Vickie360 I guess it depends on the ports they visit. As he will only get signal in a port. My son turned his on military hold so he didn't have to pay the monthly charges when he wasn't able to use it. Mine also took his laptop to watch movies. Depending on where they work in this depends on computer access. Both of mine worked in shops with a computer so we communicated via email and FB message. Even with the phone turned off it will work on wifi so when in port he used the wifi. There are also free texting and calling apps that you both can load that will work on wifi while in port. Hope this helps. They can use the ships phone but it costs money and there is normally a wait.

I've asked several moms and I am trying to figure out all the options about phones and deployment.. Should we get an "interntional plan" on his existing phone or should he get a "pay as you go" phone...If he takes his phone, what should he turn off so we don't get all kinds of charges?  If he uses the ship's phones, do they have access to it often?  Should he take his computer on the ship?  I have so many questions about how we will communicate while he is gone and how we should pay...

My son chose base housing this time until they find one to buy. The rent is very expensive so he said it is cheaper to make house payments. Once he got checked in it only took a week to get housing. They have a nice 3 bed 2 1/2 bath house. They have a son and one on the way.
