Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves

(Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

I have left info on some of your My Pages about your future Sailor's rating (job/specialty) and "A" School. If anyone else needs this info, leave a comment on my My Page with the rating or field and I will comment back on your My Page. I have info on every rating and field. I also have that info for the PACT programs.

Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for..., and to start discussing some of the things there with your future Sailor such as how to handle bad news and who will be put on the Access List....

If you have not yet joined Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones), now is a good time to do so and to begin checking out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) starting with OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile) (some of you have changes that you need to make--at least change 3; make change 4 if your profile pic includes your future Sailor or recruit) and then go on to Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

Hi bats27!   In Texas no attorney was needed for what our sailor's documents but each state may be different.   We joined a low cost/simple pre-paid legal service outfit for things like this since we do a lot to help our elderly parents.  The formats are simple and you just fill in the blanks and the forms we used are free and available from numerous other websites, as well and matched what our legal plan provided.   These are just basic forms so if you have any potentially unique issues, you may need to check with an attorney.

We did up a limited one that just covered banking and automotive issues (we helped her donate her car to the Purple Heart association after she left for Basic) and for a two year period.   That basically will cover her from the time she shipped-out last fall all the way until she gets to her first duty station.  If she ends up deploying heavily,  we can always do a new one or expand it as she desires.    While it just listed me and my wife as her agents, it's a good idea to still make the duration limited as it's good to reassess needing one or not- things change- marriage, divorce, kids, the acquisition of real estate, investments, or other assets.

While an attorney was not needed for our particular situation and state, you may definitely want to seek counsel in case there are any issues unique to your sailor's needs like children/ex-spouses, etc.

It's good to not wait until the last minute for sure so good for you!    When I was active duty back in the 1980's pre-internet, pre-email, OMG- it was a huge help as my parents were moving and I was on long and frequent deployments.   I really had no need for a car for the next three years so to not burden them, I gave them the okay to sell it for me.  Made their life easier not having to move my car, they didn't have to keep it turned-over, and it freed me from paying auto insurance on something I didn't use.  My parents didn't need a third car, either or have it taking up space.  Plus there was no chance of losing documents in the mail, etc.

Getting a medical power of attorney and HIPAA/ medical release forms will help a lot too in the event of a serious injury while on leave.   Say they get into a serious car accident while visiting- you'll need that for sure to help not only get information/help direct care, you'll need it for getting the okay to work with the military healthcare system and so forth.

If they are injured on active duty and at a military hospital, they are very good about communicating with formally listed next of kin and so forth.   It's issues that happen away from the military on leave that a medical POA and HIPAA authorization will help.

Again- do some research for your state and also Google veteran/military family websites- you may find an attorney that will do things at low cost or possibly free for military familes.

Once in A or C School or their first duty station,  the Navy Legal Offices will take care of these matters at no cost to your sailor.

DNavyFamily-Is the limited financial power of attorney same as general power of attorney. Are these forms available to print online, medical also. Do we need a attorney for this. Thanks just ant to get things rolling and not wait to last minute.

So my son came home from his DEP meeting last week with the news that his ship date had been moved up. 5 WEEKS. I almost died. Seems another kid had trouble of some kind and they moved my son to his spot. They asked him of course but he agreed without talking to us about it. He is 18 of course so didn't need our permission but still. Now I get no last family vacation and he leaves two weeks after his high school graduation. I'm really not handling this well.

Thank you Momof2  I'm going to have him do it. I asked him about it before I read your comment of course he has different story lol. This site has given me a wealth of info.

You can start the account at anytime.  There was one question about military status and you have to choose active duty, then it gives the choose for enlisted, then rank, the it will give you the chose to pick DEP.  It only takes about 15 minutes online and is pretty easy.  It is my understanding however that you still need to print the Direct Deposit form to fill out and send with your SR to boot camp.  You will know the account number and routing number as soon as you hit submit.  It requires at least a $5 minimum initial deposit.  Hope this helps.  I don't like to leave things to the last minute so I signed my son up as soon as he entered DEP.

Fuzzy, my son leaves the 14th. He mentioned about the Navy account but thought it was to soon to open. I have to ask him if someone came to his recruiters office about this. He only checks in 1x a month. Based on what your son was told they can open account now? I want to have this stuff done before I panic. Thanks

To all DEPPER families and support friends!   Some quick additional tips to do before they leave:

1) they should give a limited financial power of attorney to a trusted family member or friend to help with any bills, car issues, etc.

2) we also went as far as getting a medical power of attorney and guardianship so if they get injured during training or later on active duty, you are recognized and authorized to be involved with their care

3) a will, especially if they are married, have children, or any other resources, car, house, savings, etc.  )to help deal with anything

4) a passport- get that done now- it will be a huge help later on if they want to travel and a lot easier to do now

5) OPEN A NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SAVINGS AN CHECKING ACCOUNT and get the debit card to go with it- not just an ATM card.  NFCU has great little promotions for recruits.  VERY IMPORTANT- they need to have their account number on hand at RTC- not just the Access Number for setting up pay/direct deposit.  Our sailor's recruiter got that all recorded before Basic but they asked for it again at RTC.

6) It may be nerdy but get a small neck wallet- despite groaning about it and not liking it- she was SO THANKFUL for that.  Was able to carry ID, Debit card, phone card, $60 in cash AND a feminie napkin and phone numbers.  Kids nowdays do NOT often remember phone numbers since they all are saved- make sure you give them a slip of paper with all the key phone numbers- they only have one chance go call quickly and only so many seconds to try if they can't reach you first to you know they arrived.  The wallets are about $10 on Amazon.  Make sure it's black or olive drab- not colors, etc.

Sorry my 'quick note' was long!
