1 year later

June of last year was when my then fiancé (now husband) left for bootcamp. We dated for years and have a son together, we just recently got married! Looking back, I never really expected to get used to this lifestyle so soon. i was lost while he was in bootcamp and no one really seemed to understand me. I was so grateful when I found this site and was able to communicate with everyone that was going through the exact same thing as me at the same time. We were all so excited when PIR finally… Continue

Out of my mind proud after PIR 4/15/16

I just wanted to talk a little bit about my most humbling and awe- inspiring experience with my sailor this weekend. I never in a million years would have thought this would be as amazing as it was. I feel like I am now a part of an exclusive and unique group of people who have so much to be proud of. I have never been a fan of the military, but was at my wit's end with my son. He was miserable after a breakup of a long-term relationship, stuck in a dead- end job, and despised school. This…

Form letter received

Happy, happy, Joy, joy! I have looked at her letter, address and the information contained herein more times than what would be considered normal. I have a sense of peace now that the letter arrived. I just got back from the post office where I mailed 8 envelopes, containing 13 total letters. I told her I would number them so she would know the order written in. I am fine if she does not write back since I know that sleep is a premium and her free time, exceedingly limited.

While I…

Two Years and Going Strong

Just wanted to throw a little information out there, and had no idea where to put it, so I decided to just drop it here.

The last 2 years has been a whirlwind for us.  Our son, who I thought had no interest in military service, decided to throw us a curve ball a couple of years ago, and set us all off on this journey.  His mother and I had prepaid his college, years in advance.  Even though he comes from a long line of military service, dating back to the Revolutionary War, I never…

Home from PIR

My husband and I just got home from PIR. It went by so fast!

Friday after lunch, we just walked around a mall near the base. Then I found a park with an old fort on Lake Michigan: Fort Sheridan, Moraine, IL.  You can park and walk along the beach. It was quiet, but windy, of course. Then dinner and back to the base.

Today, his flight to A school was later in the evening, so we picked him up at the airport and took him to our hotel for a hot shower and a nap.

He's very…

Got the letter today!

It was so funny, in a way. I got the box yesterday (a week after he left), and then the letter arrived the next day.  That just goes to show that when they say it varies on how long it takes to receive things, they mean it. I thought we'd get the box in a couple of days, but in the end they arrived within a day of each other.

My son is in ship 09, div 140, so if you have a SR in that group, let me know.  I signed up for my PIR date group, and I made hotels reservations about…

Half Way to PIR 8/23

I've lost count of the letters & cards I've written to my Sr. Countless thought continue to flood my mind.  I find myself continuously jotting down notes to write in my letters.  Just think, we're half-way to PIR day.  What a Grand and Glorious Day that will be.  I can hardly wait to share those magical moments in time with my Sr.  Moments to treasure for a lifetime.

SHIP 11, Division 231, PIR 8/3/12

Just wondering if there are anyone mom's out there that have a son/daughter in this division. My son will be graduating on 8/3/12. One month left. I don't know where the best places to get a motel up there or anything. My son told me he has liberty that weekend, so i am happy for that. Just need some information on what will work out the best for our trip out there and stay.

The Letter Came Today :)

It was great to see his terrific block printing! He filled in the form letter blanks so well :) I looked all around for a little "hi mom" or something, but nope. Nothing.

He's a man of few words and apparently that hasn't changed. The letter is FILLED with information, though, so it's great to have.

Today I looked through the PowerPoint about Battle Stations. Wow, what a fantastic training facility. They are preparing sailors well!

In case you…

The BOX

The box just arrived. You know, the box that contains the items that were his last connection with civilian life.

Having read a number of others' posts, I didn't expect to see a letter inside. It's strange to see his shoes, shirt, pants, belt and phone! Yup, civilian life is gone.

Pondering: When they make their first phone call announcing their safe arrival at Great Lakes they are following a script, right? They must be to ensure the basic information is shared in the… Continue

My son graduated on 8/26/11 then went to Navy A school in Pensacola

Hi, everybody. I'm just writing this to see if I can get any advice from y'all. I haven't heard from my son in awhile. He doesn't answer his cellphone. I've been told by his fiancee that she was told be co-workers that the Navy changes them, and for the first year or so they're not themselves. Is any other mom out there that may know of a situation going on there? I'm just worried because it's so very unlike him to NOT call in this…

Bootcamp: The First 10 Days

The past couple of weeks have been the most difficult for me.  Sending my youngest daughter off to boot camp turned out to be much more difficult than I ever imagined.  I cried for days.  I kept thinking of her short 15-second phone call letting us know she had made it to GL . . . she was crying which is not at all like her.  It made me worry and constantly wonder what and how she was doing.  She left on Tuesday and arrived at GL on Wednesday.  We got "The Box" the following Monday.  My…

Number of Family members at PIR ???

I know that the recruits can only add four names to the list of people attending PIR . However, I have read on other sites that more than that may attend but have to wait in the lobby until the PIR ceremony staarts. Then if there are seats available they let them in. Is this true? We have three extras (grandparents and a cousin) that would like to attend and are planning on buying plane tickets within the next few days. Are they wasting their money? I am planning on us all arriving in one… Continue

Handle With Care

Hello All,

I'm still a little green as a new Navy Mom.
My son Lynch's PIR was 8/13/2010. He is now in Pensacola for Air Crew - NACCS is currently occupying his time. I was so excited to hear that he passed his final swim test thus far...the swim in his flight suit. I still can't wrap my head around all he has to do for his chosen career path in the US Navy. Part of me in in awe of him and so proud that he didn't take an easy way. The other half of me is worried…

The Call Home......a new chapter

The first call came tonight!! I was so happy to hear Christopher's voice (through a ridiculous amount of coughing)! I can tell you in 3 weeks he has CHANGED but he still can make me LAUGH! So, in his last letter he was trying to abbreviate his position in the division. It is not an ACPO it is an AHPO. What does that mean? Ready? He doesn't call cadence - he cleans the head (bathroom). I thought I would roll over laughing! He said it was one of the only positions they had left when he got… Continue

The Humorous Side Continues:Acronyms - New Moms BE PREPARED!!!

One thing about being on a site like this is that you get to speak with people who are in all different stages of their exposure to the Navy experience. My first two weeks with Chris away at boot camp were difficult at points emotionally. The first letter was upsetting and I waited and prayed that the next would be at least somewhat better. HOORAY! It came yesterday - written at the end of day 14 and my boy was feeling markedly different. He apologized for the negativity in his first letter and… Continue
